The experience

“Why Didn’t You Just Leave?” Is the Wrong Question.

Leaving a narcissistic, coercive or emotionally abusive relationship can be extraordinarily complicated. There may have been:

Love. Fear. Hope. Confusion. Children. Financial concerns. Isolation. Promises to change. Periods when everything seemed wonderful again. And a powerful attachment to the person you believed your partner could be.

Even after leaving, survivors may find themselves wondering:

Group psychotherapy creates space to explore these experiences without having to begin by convincing everyone that what happened was real.

Why Leaving a Narcissistic or Coercive Partner Is So Hard

Leaving is not simply about physically walking away. This group explores some of the psychological and relational dynamics that can make separation extraordinarily difficult, including:

Trauma Bonding

Understanding the powerful attachment that can develop within cycles of distress and reconnection.

Cognitive Dissonance

Trying to reconcile the loving person you remember with the person whose behaviour caused harm.

Intermittent Reinforcement

Why unpredictable periods of affection, attention or apparent change can strengthen attachment and hope.

Love Bombing & Sudden Change

Understanding why a partner may suddenly appear to become everything you wanted when they sense that the relationship may be ending.

What Happens When You Leave

Exploring grief, fear, loneliness, self-doubt, urges to reconnect and other experiences that may emerge during separation.

Why Survivors Sometimes Return

Returning does not necessarily mean that the abuse was insignificant. The group explores the complex emotional, psychological and practical forces that may pull someone back toward the relationship.

Recovery focus

Recovery Is More Than Leaving

Depending on the monthly topic and individual circumstances, group discussion may explore:

01

Understanding the relationship

Recognizing patterns and making sense of experiences that previously felt confusing.

02

Reducing self-blame

Examining beliefs about responsibility, guilt and shame.

03

Understanding trauma responses

Recognizing how the mind and body may respond to prolonged relational stress.

04

Rebuilding self-trust

Understand what is presented in a single professional interaction.

05

Understanding attachment

Exploring why someone can simultaneously recognize harm and still feel emotionally attached.

06

Boundaries

Exploring what safety, autonomy and healthy limits may look like moving forward.

07

Connection

Being in a therapeutic environment with others who may recognize experiences that are difficult to explain elsewhere.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO “LOOK LIKE A VICTIM”

There Is No One Correct Way to Respond to Abuse

Some survivors cry. Some become angry. Some become extremely calm. Some minimize what happened. Some remember every detail. Others struggle to put events into chronological order. Some still love their former partner. Some feel relief. Some feel grief. Many experience several of these reactions at different times.

Your experience does not need to resemble someone else’s experience in order to be worth exploring.

In this group, you will never be asked to justify how you survived.
